Movement Brewing Company Celebrates Five Years of Brewing Community
Movement Brewing Co. in Rancho Cordova is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and what a journey it's been! Opening in the midst of the 2020 pandemic presented immense challenges, but it also highlighted the brewery’s adaptability and commitment to delivering excellent beer. The brewery has become a staple in the Sacramento area’s craft beer scene, now known for its award-winning, creative brews and community-focused atmosphere. To celebrate this milestone, we asked Nick Cavanaugh, one of Movement’s owners, about the past five years and the Movement crew’s plans for the future. Their story is one of passion, resilience, and the power of a great pint. Read on!

Barrel District: What inspired you to first open the brewery? And more specifically, how did you select Rancho Cordova?
Nick Cavanaugh, Movement Brewing: Simply just the love for craft beer and wanting to own our own business. Rancho provided a great opportunity to be close to home, with an amazing craft beer community, and finding an existing brewery space really sealed the deal.
How did you land on the name “Movement”?
After [seeing] a lot of gimmicky names and ideas, we wanted to be different and start a new craft beer movement. Someone said, “Call it Movement, then,” and it stuck!

How would you describe your business’s journey over the last five years?
Ever changing! From getting the keys in Janurary 2020, starting construction, the world shutting down due to COVID and opening [the brewery] in Sept 2020, it was a wild ride. We’ve had to pivot and change so many times, but it’s been a great learning experience. Ultimately, every day we want to provide great beers and an amazing experience to everyone who walks through the doors.
What is an interesting fact about the brewery that customers may not know?
That Nick and Chris aren’t brothers!
What is an accomplishment from the past five years that you’re really proud of?
Hands down, the relationships we’ve built with other breweries and customers.
What is your favorite thing about doing business in Rancho Cordova?
The people who continue to visit and enjoy our beer and our space. The city has also been amazing to work with, and everyone has welcomed us into the small business community.
If you could only drink one Movement beer for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tough choice here…but Uncle Money holds a special place in our hearts.
What is next for Movement?
